Course details

The MCA Approved Engine Course (AEC)  is designed to give students both the theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on experience of diesel engines. It will enable students to carry out regular servicing of marine diesel engines, and to carry out fault detection and prevention. 

The course will provide training in the following areas

  • The compression ignition engine
  • Cycle of operation and constructional details
  • The fuel system
  • The role of air in the combustion process
  • The cooling system
  • The lubrication system
  • Power transmission
  • Hull fittings
  • Fault finding and rectification

This course meets the requirements of the MCA Codes of Practice for the Safety of Large Commercial Sailing and Motor Vessels, the Safety of Small Commercial Motor Vessels and the Safety of Small Workboats and Pilot Boats.

The course is the first level qualification for the MCA Engineering Officer training scheme. It is regarded as the first step for those with no formal marine engineering experience and is an ideal introduction for those who wish to improve and enhance their employment prospects in the various aspects of the marine industry.
