5 Day Deckhand Development - Part 2

Course details

The Deckhand Development course is designed for indivivduals who have already completed their initial training and are ready to take the next step in their commercial fishing career. This course builds on foundational skills and focuses on enhancing the practical knowledge and competencies required to work effectively and safely as a dekhand on a commecial fishing vessel. Participants will gain deeper insight into skills already learnt on the Deckhand Preparation course.

The course objectives are as follows:

• Debrief on sea time and experiences 
• Understand the importance of maintaining fishing gear
• Demonstrate how to repair and care for fishing gear
• Demonstrate and develop knots and splices learnt from Deckhand Preparation course
• Interpret and apply maritime rules of the road
• Understand the responsibilities of watchkeeping
• Understand radio communication protocols 
• Understand situational awareness
• Engage in personal development planning
• Complete mandatory first aid and fire fighting
